Re-training an ex-racehorse

Question
Hi,

I have recently bought an ex-racehorse and need some tips on how to retrain him. He is an 8yr old gelding and has been off the racetrack for about 5 months, during which time he was basically left out on his own. Understandably, he seems very scared and nervous but is making progress. the problem is that we seem to take one step forward, then two steps back. He will now stand for mins in a happy and relaxed state and will also occasionally hack out with others, but it is as if he relaxes himself then suddenly remembers where he is and that he is a racehorse every five minutes? Have you got any tips for prolonging his happy periods? And, also, for making him hack out alone? At the moment he can only manage to stay within site of the stableyard. Many thanks!

Answer
Hi Harriet,
You have encountered one of racings great dilemmas; how to reposition a thoroughbred racehorse back into the general population.
This takes great patience and a good deal of TLC.(tender loving care)
You have correctly identified and descibed some of the classic characteristics associated with this transition.
Its a matter of rebuilding his confidence and letting him know that his role in life is now quite different.
Take him for walks, on a lead rope at first, well away from his usual habitat. Stroke him and talk to him while you are doing this. Spend time 'at rest' with him just picking so he gets comfortable away from home.
Its basically just time and care that will build his confidence.

Hope this helps,
