Abdominal Cramp

2016/7/22 10:09:26

Question
For the past year or so, I have noticed that I get a cramp towards the right upper portion of my abdomen 30 minutes into my run.  This happens every month for about a week.  When I started tracking when I would get them, I found out that it is always the week after my period.  This is not a cramp from being out of shape, I work out 6 days a week and eat very healthy.  I do not get the cramp until exactly 30 minutes into my run, I can set my watch to it!  I have tried to breath through them, but it does not help.  I have to walk for 5 to 10 minutes.  Once it goes away, I try to run again but it comes right back.  Is this common for women?  Is there anything I can do to help it?

Answer
Hi, Jaime

That's a tough question.  I've certainly gotten cramps in that location, but not at precisely the same interval and at the same time of the month every time.

I don't know if it is common for women.  I'm inclined to say no, but I could be wrong.

The thing with muscle cramps is that you can only stretch them out and/or avoid the motion that causes the cramp, if possible.

Now, I'm not going to tell you not to run.  Also, it seems as though you've been able to work it out during that 5-10 minute walk.

There are a couple of routes to go from here, but only one I would strongly suggest.  I would get to an athletic trainer or physical therapist who can more precisely tell you what's going on and give you the proper remedy.  They are definitely the go-to people on this one as there are some things we can't work out on our own.  You also want to make sure that this this isn't an indication of damage in another part of your body.

So, see an athletic trainer or physical therapist and they should be able to get you on the right track with less pain.
