Numbness in feet

2016/7/22 10:11:51

Question
I am currently training for a very hard trail/hilly half marathon.I am 39 years old and in good shape I run 4 marathons a year (4:00 average) so I am use to training but recently I have been experiencing numbness in my feet. It started with just a small tingle going from foot to foot but has increased to where today both feet were totally numb (in the uphill sections of the trail) for about 5 miles until they lessoned. I do know I am dealing with some calf strain because of some over use this week (40+ miles/3 hill workouts- yes which was dumb)but don't think the two are connected. Any ideas on the foot numbness?

Answer
Michele,

Most likely it is either your shoes are worn out and need to be replaced, or it is as easy as you are currently tying your shoes too tight. It sounds funny, but I have had this question a few times, and it turned out to be that the shoes were tied too tight. Try this first. If it isn't this, chances are then good that you have a nerve problem. Maybe a muscle is putting too much pressure on a nerve, etc. I don't think it is serious.Stretch, ice, take some anti-inflammatories, and run easy on flat ground for a few days.
