nausea and running

Question
Hi John.  I've been running for several years & completed 3 marathons.  The past several weeks I've been experiencing nausea with my runs.  I typically don't eat before a run if its under 10 miles.  I've tried adding gels during my run and eating before the run to prevent nausea but nothing seems to help.  I do have a new running partner thats a little faster than me...I've been able to keep up without too much problem.  Today, we ran 10 miles (stopped for several water & gel breaks) and I became very nauseated and remain so throughout the day.  I have had my bloodwork checked recently, and my blood sugar is the very low end of normal.  I did have symptoms of hypoglycemia at that time (dizzy, cold sweat, nausea).  Could this be a impending blood sugar problem or am I working harder than I think (i.e. increase HR)?  Thanks so much for your imput.

Answer
Hi Carly
I really don't think you have a sugar problem and your work ethic even pushing  a little harder with your new training partner should have no effect other than a little tiredness.I know for sure with 98% accuracy because i have been doing this and running for 30 years that you can trace back in your training when injuries or other things started to surface. The body does talk and it is our job to listen and correct the problems and not blow off some of those tell tale signs which many times revert to a more serious injury. With out knowing much about you and your training and your diet, height weight etc.I would venture to guess that you were depleted weak before you started the run and then you pushed and your body rebelled.I hope that has helped and gave you some food for thought. If you have other questions just get in touch.I would really take a look at your diet to insure proper balance of nutrients on a regular basis.

All the best

John
