medical check-up

Question
Hi John,

I am a 30 year old male and recently took to running. Over the last 5 months I have been increasing the distance and now would like to train for marathon. I feel great physically, but still feel uneasy when read about heart attacks during marathons. What kind of check-up/tests would I need in order to see whether or not there is a risk for me?

Thanks.

Roman

Answer
Hi Roman
The chances are microscopic that you will have a heart attack, but have a good look at some indicators is a smart move.First thing is to check with your family history such as your mother father uncle aunt. Some of the things you could discuss with your doctor are EKG,Echocardiogram, complete blood work up.These should give you the necessary information.Next i would make sure your height weight is in proper ratio and i would strongly recommend you treat the training preparations for the marathon very seriously, since this is the one thing you can control and will go a long ways to a real great experience and insure minimal complications.I don,t know anything about your past athletic background and present training, but i would give your self 6 1/2 months to prepare a proper build up to ensure and eliminate the many situations that will arise if you try to rush it and not put in the proper mileage etc.Getting an experience coach would be a very valuable resource just like your medical work up as some good insurance. If you have any other questions Roman just get in touch.

All the best

John
