Knee and Calf Pain

Question
I've been training for a Nov. 9 marathon. No problems until two weeks ago during last long run (27 miles). At mile 21 both knees started hurting, first on lateral side, then medial side. Next day soft, fleshy area behind both knees was very sore, as was inside knee radiating down and to front. Right knee is OK now but left is still tender and left calf has very tender muscle soreness. I've been resting, using advil, ice and elevation, along with Stick for massage but it's still quite sore. Thinking about getting a massage but wondering if that's wise this close to the marathon. What do you recommend?

Answer
Hi Jim
First i would do no running till the marathon and just go for walks.I really don't think the massage is going to help at all.The damage is done. You just have to let it heal. You can add some epson salt baths for the next 4 days, but not past monday.Put 3 to 4 cups in a hot tub and soak for 30min.These are great for healing. The walking will get the blood with nutrients going through. Also add 500mg vit c to your 3 meals a day to enhance recovery of tendons, tissue, cell structure etc.And keep up the ice.Don't use the stick any more, your just going to irritate the soft tissue.Any other questions just get in touch.Let me know how it works out.

All the best

John
