Benefits of Hill Running: Boost Speed and Strength

Question
There is a steep hill where I live, wooded, with a path in summer.
I hear the local soccer and hockey players run to the top.
I tried it but at this point can only walk fast(I am 50).
Since I am a rec hockey and soccer player I think I will do it regularly.
Can you explain the benefits as opposed to level runs/walks?

Answer
Barry,
With hills, you have to produce much greater forces to maintain speeds going up it.  Its a way of developing something called 'specific strength' for speed.  Since I don't know how long or what grade the hill is at, I really can't recommend trying to run it, even though you're a recreational 50 year old hockey/soccer player.  Most guys who are 50 can't handle things as much as a young HS athlete can, so keep that in mind.  If you were to 'tackle' it with running, I would take breaks as you need them.  Inclines can raise the heart rate up very quickly. I hope this helps you.
