Running as I get older

Question
Hello,

I am a male, 45 years old, 5'7", 150 lbs.  I had been running (constantly) very competitively until a few years ago when I tore my hamstring.  It is slowly getting better, but, meanwhile, I am having problems with my heart.  It flip-flops around frequently, particularly when I push myself during exercise, but even sometimes while resting, swimming laps, etc.  I took a stress test and the doc found no problems, he said I'm the healthiest person he's ever seen.  I feel my physical condition is still very good, but realistically probably gradually going downhill.

My question is, considering all this, when I run (assuming re-injuring my hamstring was not a factor), should I push myself, or should I relegate my self to "the old man shuffle jog"?  In other words, do the benefits of pushing myself while exercising outweigh the risks at my age, considering my condition?  I think my competitive racing days are in the past, so my question is geared toward optimal heart health.

Thanks!,
Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff
First 45yrs old is not old and your competive days are done if thats what you choose. If you think you can or you think you can't....They are both right.Your mind contols where you want to go....Your body folows along for the ride. That being said i need a better description of your heart flip floping.Does it start to race a little from time to time?Be very specific when, where, how often,am or pm or both, when did it start, how long running,etc.etc.etc.I really do not think you have anything to worry about, but when the heart is involved you have to take a look see.Get back to me.

Best to ya
