Knee pain during long runs

Question
I am an active 23 year old male and I have been experiencing knee pain on the outside portion of my knees. This pain only occurs after about 4 miles of running.  The pain is most intense during longer runs and eventually goes away days after if I don't run.  I have noticed that it hurts when I walk DOWN stairs and really doesn't bother me too bad any other time.  I have been to doctors about this problem and they have told me that there is nothing they can do to correct it. They said it's something to do with my tendons getting inflamed (but I don't remember exactly what they called it).  I have had steroid shots in the knee but this only helps a little and goes away shortly after.
Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Jeremy
It sounds like to me that it could be chondromalacia,Disintegration of the patella and femoral cartilage surfaces, resulting in uneven rough gliding motion between these structures. The knee tracks like a train on the tracks and sometimes when it is jared or you fall or lateral movment can disrupt the normal smooth gliding motion of this structure and surounding tendons and ligaments.
I recomend 500mg of vitamin C with your 3 meals a day plus ride a stationary bike 3 times a week for 30 minutes to help with the retracking of the knee, and leg extentions light weight 15 to 20 reps, and leg curls. You can continue to run but would cut back a little on distance and intentsity till the problem susides and goes away. Also ice it after workouts.Let me know how it works for you Jeremy.

To a speedy recovery
