Getting back

2016/7/22 8:48:24

Question
I have recently been trying to get back into climbing after a year and a half hiatus due to a broken arm. prior to the injury i was climbing quite a bit, but by no means was an expereinced climber. my question is relating to getting abck into climbing shape. what are some exercizes that can help speed up the process, or at least make it a more effienct one, and which muscles are the most important to get and keep strong? one more... i have been told running is a good exercize for climbers, how to you feel about it?
thanks
Jena

Answer
If you are able, I have always believed that the best way to get into shape for climbing is to climb.  If you're not able to stress your arm to that degree, I would begin by focusing on your pulling muscles like your back and biceps.  When exercising these muscles, don't forget to do the oposites as well, i.e. shoulders, pecs and tricps.  If you don't you may develop joint problems.  Depending on the difficulty of your climbing, the midsection can be very important for stability, etc.  So focus on your abs, obliques, and lower back as well.  Now that I think about it more, all parts of your body are used while climbing.  So, don't forget your legs as they are typically much stronger than your upper body and should support the majority of your wieght whenever posible.  As for running; at one time I was a pretty good climber due to the fact that I was climbing atleast 4 times a week and never ran.  I do think though that it would be good for your respitory and physical endurance, again it depends on what kind of climbing you are doing wether it be long routes or bouldering.  Long story short, I recommend climbing to get better at climbing.  Take it easy at first, there is no rush, the rock will always be there.  Hope that helps, if you have any more questions, please don't hesitate.  Climb safe and thanks for the question,

Nick
