Hiking and climbing shoes

2016/7/22 8:48:25

Question
Hello ! Nicholas, I am new to climbing and need some advice on shoes and hiking boots. I am overweight by 30lbs and I also wear a extra wide width shoe {size 4 to 6 EE }. The shoe would also need to allow room for orthotic insoles.
Any suggestion on brands/types would be greatly appreciated and possibly where to buy them.
"Thanks"
Ron

Answer
I don't think that I can help you with the boots other than to say try them on at the store, but that's obvious.  As for the climbing shoes, I have wider feet also and I recommend that you go with a shoe that laces all of the way to the toe.  This way, you can lace the shoe to fit your foot.  I have found that Boreal has a bit wider shoe, but I haven't looked for shoes in a couple of years and there are some new brands to the market like Red Chili, etc.  Usually, magazines like Rock & Ice and Climbing will do reviews on climbing shoes and boots.  You may find it helpful to check their web sites.  I believe that those magazines also had a listing of retailers in areas across the US.  If not, depending on your area, you can go to outdoor stores like The North Face, REI, Erehwon, or your local climbing gym.  Hope that helps and thanks for the question,

Nick
