Slings

I apologize but I am new to rock climbing and everywhere I have read they have told me that I needed to purchase a few 120cm Slings as an essential in climbing.  Would it be okay to ask you what these slings are used for?  Sorry and thank you!

No appology is necessary.

It really depends on what type of climbing you are doing. That is about four feet right.  I think that you would most likely use these for setting anchors at a belay station if you are doing multi pitch climbing.  You may also use them as equalizers on a top rope.  A third option may be to use them as a very long quickdraw when leading.

I would suggest that you ask your fellow climbers what they have and what they use the most.  Different climbing areas and styles require a wide range of equipment.  From only shoes and chalk for bouldering to many bags of gear for big wall climbing.  I wouldn't buy something until you know what you will use it for.
