grips for kids?

Question
Although I've enjoyed rock climbing on vacation i'm not much of a climber.

We are remodeling a house and my wife and I thought it would be fun to install a climing wall for my son, who is a little monkey.  What size grips would be good for a five-year old?

Answer
http://www.nicrosstore.biz.sco.com/

This is the address for a climbing hold company, Nicros, which has a line of holds called "Kidz Holdz".

To answer your question though, I think it would be easier for your son to hold on to holds thay Nicros calls "Incuts".  These are holds your fingers curl arround, or into, as opposed to open hand holds similar to Nicros Sloper's line.  As far as size, if you look at the photos of the holds that are on the Nicros web site, you'll see a metal carabiner.  Carabiners are about the size of your palm.  Look at the portion of the hold that is incut and ask your self if you think your son could hold on to that sized hold.  Can he get his fingers arround the top of the hold so the bottom of his second knuckle is on the top edge of the hold?  I would guess that hold sizes would be about 1-3 carabiners in size depending on the shape.

Hope that helps.  Feel free to let me know if you would like more information.  I'll list a couple of other climbing hold sites below.

http://www.cheapholds.com/index2.html - their "buckets" would be good.  the name doesn't indicate quality.

http://www.indoorclimbing.com/climbing_holds.html  -  Large list of climbing hold companies.  I suggest Pusher as well as VooDoo.
