Question
I am a 14 year old rowing my first season. My erg time was  7:07 for 2K. Currently 6'1" tall and about 195 lbs. I live in Canada and am curious how much of a long shot a U.S. scholarship would be. I row stroke in a 8 heavyweight. What should I work on, what target times should I set my goals for? I realize I've been at this for only 6 months but I love this sport!! I look forward to your response. Thank you.

Answer
Hi James: I think you have great potential for recruitment be a U.S. or Canadian college by Senior year.  Your above-average 2K time, size and experience all work in your favor.

I'd say by Senior, you will need 3 things to be in contention for a rowing scholarship:

1) Lots of on-water racing experience and success in these regattas
2) 2K score of 6:45 or better
3) GPA of 3.5 pr better

Good Luck/AP
