Question
Hey, my name is Hans. I am 5'7" 175 lbs. I am a junior at Newburgh Free Academy. I was a novice this year pulling a PR of 7.15 for my 2K. I wanted to know how to lower my 2K time by doing what? And whether or not to lose more weight because I have a feeling that my coach will be putting me in the V8 for next year or this summer. Should I buy my own ergometer?

Answer
Hi Hans: I attached a link to the results of the Junior Men's Heavyweight results at the CRASH-B Sprints, the premiere event in indoor rowing:

While your time is decent for a novice, as you can see you have room for improvement if you want to be in the upper half of your peers.

There are numerous ergometer workouts and routines that you can try.  The Concept II web site has the following:

What I would add is that you need to build your strength and endurance base through an intensive program of weight training and running (particularly running up hills or flight of stairs)

Since you have a long way to go to make lightweight, I wouldn't do any deliberate weight loss programs.  Undoubtedly, you are still growing.  Just eat sensibly, workout and your body will determine what your best "fighting weight" is.

As for buying an ergometer, be advised they run at $1000.  That's a lot of coin.  Your best bet is to seek out a local gym that has an erg.  Just about every gym has one these days.
