Awkward weight and height?

2016/7/22 9:47:54

Question
Hello,
I am 5'7 and 135lbs. For women, my understanding is that to row lightweight you have to be below 130lbs which I am above but aren't I too short for openweight? I've heard that most colleges will take people who are around my height but what about the top schools? Am I too short? I only started rowing this summer so there is the possibility that I will lose weight but I also have a tendency to build muscle quickly. But since muscle actually weighs more than fat I feel like I'm in an awkward situation.

Answer
Hi Thea: There are so many factors to consider with respect to your future in college, that it is probably unwarranted for you to stress over whether you will be lightweight or heavyweight.  More likely than not, you are going to add some more muscle (and weight).  This is fine.  I think your height is adequate to make 99% of the open-weight crews out there.  Maybe the Canadian National Team may desire 6'-0" and up.  But really, worry about that when you become an elite rower.

Your key goals should be the following:

1) Good grades and SATs to get into a good acaemic school
2) Gain added rowing experience and racing experience
3) Do the best with what you have, i.e., don't stress over weight and height and other things out of your control.

Good Luck/AP
