Question
Hey-

I am always nervous before a 2k..not like a little nervous but so nervous that it keeps me up at night. Do you have any ideas that could help me?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Diana: I can commiserate with you.  I used to dread doing ergometer pieces when I rowed in college.  I dreaded the fact that I was going to be in agony.  I dreaded the fact that my time was probably going to be crappy and hold me back from making a good boat.  I used to get "sick" just to miss a scheduled piece (but I also missed class).

Now in my day, we didn't use Concept II ergs.  We had these monstrous contraptions that just were gruesomely painful to row.  In my first year of rowing, we didn't even use ergs; ironically, that was probably my most enjoyable year.  I also felt the same uneasiness you felt the night before a race.  All these feelings are natural to any athlete to any big event.  As long as it doesn't affect your performance, you should be okay.

I think today, the Concept II ergometer is such an integral part to a crew training regimen that it should be second nature to you. You know what your expected time is going to be and you can monitor your pace with the stroke/500 meter.

I don't have an easy answer for you.  I don't know if you are a top-level rower or someone who is struggling to make a boat.  By now, you should be on the water anyway. You do want to have a good night's sleep before a 2K or race.  I would have a little extra pasta or potatoes for dinner.  More food makes you a little drowsier.  I would also do extra homework.  That helps get you tired.  Finally, I'd finish the night with a hot shower and take 1 Motrin before going to bed.

Just relax...it will all work out.
