Question
Hello, I'm a third season rower at 5'11" and 145 pounds. My recent 2k a little while ago was a 7:20, and I want to know if that's good, especially for my weight. I'm interested in rowing in the lightweight division in college, and I'm curious as to what time to shoot for to impress colleges and universities. I'm hoping to drop this time by at least 10 to 15 seconds after we start rowing, as that 2k was done before we got out on the water. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Tim: Your 2K is just a few seconds off the average lightweight time posted by lightweight rowers your age (7:15).  While a 10-15 second goal will put you above average, you need a time of like 6:45 or better to get recruited solely on erg potential alone.

I suggest a goal of 7:00 and a resume of on-water racing experience and success would get you a possible scholarship opportunity.  Of course, your grades have to be excellent as well.

Good Luck/AP
