Am I to small?

2016/7/22 9:47:49

Question
I am a fifteen year old girl who is 5'4" and bout 95 lbs. I stroke on my novice team in our A boat but I don't know if their is any possibility in varsity and college rowing. I have been rowing since I was twelve, I can also scull. My 2k was 1:49, my 5k was 1:53. I can run and lift, but all of the girls on varsity are at least 5'10". I love crew and hope that I have a future with it. A lot of my teammates said I should be a cox, but I would really rather row.

Answer
Hi Erica: I would normally say you are the perfect weight for a coxswain, but your experience and your erg time is so good, that you MUST row.  I think as you get older, you will gain a little more weight.  You can help that process out through a muscle-building weight lifting routine and a higher calorie intake based on eating more healthy foods.

You might grow an inch or two as well.  I think if you got 5'-5" and about 125 pounds by college, you will be a top-level lightweight rower.

Bottom Line: You might be a bit small, but you are too good not to row.

Good Luck/AP
