Question
My son has an erg time of 6:50 on the 2k and is on the varsity crew team  in the
lightweight boat for his club.  He is only a sophomore and his coach says he has
potential.   Which universities have lightweight crew teams and how high does his
GPA have to be with this erg time to be recruited?

Hi Miles: Your son's 2K time is outstanding.  He is in the Top-10% for his age and weight group.  Your coach's assessment further validates his potential to row for a top-caliber lightweight crew.

A general estimate is that for every college that has a crew program, about 60% have lightweight programs.  When I rowed at Temple in the late 70s - early 80s, we had a lightweight Varsity my first year, no lightweight boats the next two years, and as a senior I rowed in the lightweight four.  My point is lightweight programs come and go in smaller schools.  But who's to say your son doesn't put on a lot of muscle in the next few years and becomes a heavyweight.

Your best lightweight crews include any of the Ivy League schools, and other big crew schools like Sysracuse, Boston University, Rutgers, U. of Washington, U. of California and Wisconsin.  Many schools compete in the Dad Vail circuit, which is comprised of smaller programs like Delaware, Georgia Tech, St. Joes (in Philly), Marietta (Ohio), Michigan and Mich. State.

When it is time to pick a school and program, you will have to consider several factors for your son in school selection, such as the school's quality of academics, quality of the crew program, the coach's interest in your son, location, and your financial situation.  The good news is he has time to improve and present himself to prospective coaches who may offer scholarship maoney to him.
