Average guy rowers?

2016/7/22 9:48:20

Question
I'm a 16 year old guy. I weigh about 180 lbs, and am 6'4. My erg score usually sits at a couple seconds over 7:00 for a 2k. I was wondering exactly how big I have to be and what erg scores I have to have to be considered for college teams or scholarships. Basically I'd like to know erg score averages for high school guys, erg score averages for college guys, and erg score averages for scholarships. Please and thankyou!

Answer
Hi Alex: Your time is a second or 2 better than the average for heavyweights your age.  Your height makes you an outstanding prospect for college and club rowing.  However, you are a bit underweight for 6'-4".  You might fill in naturally or you can speed up the process through weight lifting and increasing your protein intake.

Using erg times to determine recruitment potential is quite subjective.  Some coaches emphasize the erg while others are more interested in your on-water results as well as good erg times.

To answer your question, I'll give you the following 2K estimates and goals:

High School:
Average time: 7:03
College Coach Interest Time: 6:48
Possible Scholarship Time: 6:34

College:
JV Time (2nd Tier Crew): 6:50
Varsity Time 2nd Tier Crew/JV Time Upper-Tier Crew: 6:30
Varsity Time (Upper Tier Crew): 6:20

Good Luck/AP
