cross training for rowing

Question
Hello,
I'm on a long trip and will be coming into my team's training program part-way through before we start spring season. The problem is there are no ergs here, are running and lifting a good substitute? I have never had the best erg scores compared to the rest of my team because I'm pretty light for an openweight but I'm good in the boat. What can I do to try to make sure my erg scores are OK when I get back?

Answer
Hi Reba: You know, when I first started rowing in 1979, there were no Concept II ergometers and the old-type flywheel-and-brake ergometers were so expensive, only a few schools had them.  Incredibly, people actually were still able to row fast in the days before the CII erg came around.

Yes, a good weight training and running regimen is just as good as working out on the ergometer.  In fact, the weights will help you build muscle and add weight -- something an erg alone won't do for you.

It is very important that you keep a good workout program during your trip.  You might be a bit behind when you rejoin your team.  You might want to ask your coach what he wants you to do while you are gone.

Good Luck/AP
