Why am I still rowing?

Question
Hey, I am a 15 year old novice rower, and I am question whether I should continue rowing due to the following reasons. I weigh about 145 lbs, I am almost 6', however, my 2k time is 7:20.1. I've only done about 3 2k tests, however, I am not producing times that will impress anyone. I feel sub-par to all the other rowers and I am contemplating bulking up over this next summer, so not to be lightweight any longer.

On the water, however, I am always on my team's A8+ and A4+ but I cringe when thinking about years to come. How am I going to be one of those amazing and tall behemoth rowers in college with sub 7 erg scores when I am a frail and short lightweight?

Answer
Hi Dario: The question you should be asking yourself is not how you are going to compete against perceived superior competition, or why my erg scores are not so great.  The questions you should be asking is: Do I enjoy the sport? Do I enjoy rowing?

It looks like your coach considers you an asset to the crew, otherwise he wouldn't have you in the varsity boat.  Your teammates don't seem to have a problem with you in the boat.  Your erg scores are fine for someone your age and weight.  They'll only get lower as you get older and stronger.

By all means, go ahead and try to gain some muscle mass with an effective weight training program and a sensible diet.  You can still put on anoother 10 pounds and still row as a lightweight.  Remember, many colleges have lightweight programs.

If you are looking for some new challenges, try sculling, especially single sculling.  The bottom line is that you have a great head start over many rowers.  Stick with the sport.  It really is a great sport.
