new wetsuit and weights

2016/7/22 10:35:50

Question
I recently purchased a new 3mm wetsuit which is just like the one I previously had. (old one was worn) When I did the first dive in it I needed a lot more wight. Do you typically need more weight with a new suit - or could it be the 10 lbs I put on:) Thanks.

Answer
Hi Diane,

It is likely that the extra weight you require for your new wetsuit is due to the material in the wetsuit itself.  Wetsuit material (neoprene) is composed of millions of tiny bubbles which provide insulation and also provide buoyancy.  As the material ages, it slowly degrades and these bubbles will rupture.  This causes a thinning of the material, a loss of insulation and also a loss of buoyancy.  This explains why you will need more weight to sink your new wetsuit as opposed to your old one.

To preserve the useful life of your new wetsuit, Rinse it after use and hang it to dry in the shade.  Try not to leave it exposed to the sun. Don't store it folded or store heavy objects on top of it.  When packing it in your dive bag, try to roll it around a towel and place it on the top of your gear so it's not squashed or creased.

As for the 10 pounds you may have put on...let's just call it additional insulation!!

Happy Diving!!
