browning 270 Belgian

Question
I am thinking about buying a browning 270 bolt action rifle made in Belgium from an old friend who is not going to be able to hunt anymore. The rifle has been hunted with since he bought it in the early 60's so it's not pristine, it has been well cared for however & I'll continue to hunt with it. So I'm not looking for a collectors piece I just want to give him a fair price for it. He had a custom stock built for it in the 60's also. The serial # is L1661 Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Dennis.
As I have answered previously, it has been difficult for me to answers some questions on Browning dates of manufacture. Serial numbers continue to defy the set arrangement. The ' L ' prefix I have found is for 1959. Therefore, it is possible your friend purchased it new in the early 60's. The next ' L ' in the Browning serial number line was used much later. The latest price in Fjasted's Blue Book of Gun Values lists the Browning High Power Rifle at 60% for $550. 60% is the general condition of a well used rifle. This value may differ somewhat from the going price in todays market. You might check prices at these gun web sites; www.gunsinternational.com or www.gunsamerica.com; or the auction sites at; www.gunbroker.com or www.auctionarms.com.
I hope this helps answer your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
