gun with little markings. What kind is it?

Question
I received a .38 revolver from a safety deposit box of my deceased grandfathers.  It hadn't seen sunlight in 20 years ...no one remembered he had it. It has very little markings on it.

Pearl handle. Blued. 6 shot revolver. It has a small engraving of a horse on the left side. It is rared back on its back two legs. The gun appears to have been shortened because the letters OLICE (police) and then under it SITIVE (positive i assume)then .38.  When i open it...I see 364701 with a T under it.Maybe this is the serial number. The trigger is exposed in the front i assume for a quicker shot.

I really don't care about the value because it was my grandfathers and I wont sell it. But I would be interested to find out more about the handgun.  It also had 2 old boxes of shells in there.

Thanks for your time.

Answer
I think this might be it:

The horse standing up on it's rear legs is the standard Colt handgun symbol.

You can do some research on line and find lots of info.
