Question
This gun was given to me by a neighbor that we have known for very long. The # on the weapon is 2178096. Would you be able to tell me when it was manufactured and do I need to register the weapon or can I just have it without some kind of paperwork saying that it now belongs to me?

Answer
check this link for your serial number.

As for registration, local laws apply, not sure where you are at, but call the local Police and don't give them personal info, just ask general questions and see if they have a web site or someone to refer you to.

I would get bill of sale from owner saying it was gift and he is giving it to you.  That way you have proof that if was actually given to you and when.
