Question
My son ha s the above weapon and he would like to know what the #19 that is stamped on the barrel means, what type of barrel came on this gun (is it safe to shoot shotgun shells through),and the value of this weapon (very good condition).

Answer
Hi Sue,

The number "19" is a proof/makers mark form manufacturing. It would contain pertinent factory info however I cannot advise of exactly what the "19" means vs other proof markings.

As for the barrel........ Since Davis was the manufacture of both percussion and cartridge shotguns from 1853 to 1919, they made both steel and Damascus (looks like wire tightly wrapped into a solid twist design). If Damascus, it would not be safe to shoot with modern smokeless ammo as the pressure would be dangerously high.

Since I cannot personally inspect the firearm I cannot be sure which it is. You may be able to determine that based upon my description. If not, I suggest having a qualified gunsmith inspect it for you and advise you wether or not it is "safe to shoot".

As for value, the average retail value of a Davis (depending upon model) in "good" condition is between $100 and $300.

Thanks for the question Sue.
