Serial # Location

Question
I was looking at a Springfield Model 67F ( under that it reads Savage Arms )20 Gauge Pump Shotgun . - I also see Proof Tested 20 20 Gauge 3" Chamber - But i can't find a serial # on it - Do i have to get the owner to take down part of it to get @ the Serial # ? -  Thanks , Charles

Answer
Charles,

Sounds like the shotgun in question was build prior to 1968.  Long guns were not required to have serial numbers prior to January 1, 1969, so a lot of manufacturers did not put one on their guns.  I have a Mossberg 500 that does not have a serial number for that very reason...

If the gun is of more recent vintage, there is generally a serial number stamped on the side of the receiver just above the trigger or on the bottom of the receiver just forward of the loading gate.

Hope this helps you out.

Doug
