Walthers 7.65 mm

Question
Hello, Doug

I need help trying to find all the information on my Walther Cal 7.65 Mod PP.  So far, I found out that I have the Black second variation from the insides of the grips (years of circa 1930-1937). On the Slide and the barrel their is a "N" with what appears to be a crown above. I only have one set of serial number and no letter after it example P/K/W ect...  The serial number is only in one place as you can see in the photo right side behind trigger.  No where else. The magazine has no serial number but only a WALTHER SYMBOL.  On the holster behind the lock strap I found the letters of
"D.P.G.M and below that a logo of two rifles crossing.  Serial #940978 which I couldn't find in any forums to pin point the year.  If you can please help me, I would be grateful.

Answer
Joe,

As I have mentioned to several others, I am generally not answering questions of this type any longer since they simply require too much time and research.

I will tell you what I can about your gun.  The version you have is indeed a pre-WWII production.  The "Crown over N" confirms that it was manufactured prior to April, 1940.    The second variation you speak of also narrows it a little further.

The DPGM should actually be "DRGM" if you look carefully.  It stands for "Deutsches Reich Gebrauchsmuster" which is a design registration mark, kind of like a 'trademark'.

It is a little odd that the serial number only appear in one place on the gun.  Typically in wartime production guns, there are serial numbers located on both the slide and the frame.  This does not seem to be the case on 'pre war' guns, again confirming you have a pre 1940 manufactured gun.

I was able to finally located a serial number reference.  Your gun was made in late 1936.  The serial number range for 1936 began with 889xxx and ended with 942xxx.

I would appreciate if you did not 'ding' me for lack of a prompt response.  Your question came in while I was traveling and I did not have access to any of my resource materials.

Hope this helps you out...

Doug
