Python 357

Question
My colt (python 357) serial number is 50182.Would you have any idea on the manufacture date or history?  Is it 1977?
Also what is the best round for range - target practice

Hello Michael.

Your Colt Python was made in 1965. They started 1966 with serial number 50500 so your gun was made near the end of the year.

For most target practice such as paper targets at 25 yards or less, I generally recommend .38 Special loads with full metal jackets such as the Winchester USA 130 grain FMJ load. These are cheaper than 357 ammunition and they have a bit less noise / perceived recoil. The full metal jacket helps to minimize lead build-up in your cylinder and bore but be sure to clean the pistol with a good 2-in-1 solvent like the Birchwood-Casey Gun Scrubber brand which is sold at Walmart. This will remove any copper traces which are left behind by the copper jacket.
