1965 S&W Chiefs Special Model 37

Question
I have inherited this revolver and I don't believe that it's ever been fired.  My 22 year old son, who is a deer hunter, wants to have the gun.  Is it worth anything to start with?  Would you just hang onto it and have it appreciate in value and give it to him later?

Answer
Hi Terry,
The gun you have is probably never going to be worth very much as a collector. Not knowing anything more than the model and age, it is probably worth about $300 to $375....if it has never been shot and has the box MAYBE $450.

I would keep it if it has sentimental value, but it would be a poor collector to keep from an investment standpoint. Note that if it IS unfired in the box, and you DO shoot it, the value will diminish quite a bit.
The model 37's are great little shooters, and would work well for a "carry" gun if someone was so inclined. The newer models are made with a lightweight frame, and have a "transfer bar" system, as well as a key lock. The transfer bar system and the key lock make the older ones somewhat more sought after, but there were a kazillion of those in production and I doubt it would ever be worth too much. (Of course you never can tell what will happen in the future either).

I hope this has helped.

Brad
