youth 20ga shotgun

Question
I want to buy my son his first shotgun.  My neighbor just bought a new Browning and we were shocked to see "Made in Japan" stamped on the barrel.  I want to buy my boy an American made gun.  What about the Mossberg 500 Super Bantam?  Are any shotguns still made in the good ole USA?

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Very good question and not one that most people give much consideration to these days. The main reason no doubt being that many highly sought after and desirable shotguns are made outside of the U.S.A.(and yes...also some junk) In general the workmanship often equals and in several cases, exceeds some U.S. manufactures. I personally think that Browning (as in your example) is one of those companies.

That said, I also can understand your desire to purchase  "made in the U.S.A." and the Mossberg has supplied the U.S. market for decades with quality firearms at a reasonable price. The Super Bantam is a perfect example of a shotgun that meets this criteria and would be fine gun to start your Son out with.

As you no doubt know the Bantam is a slightly smaller gun compared to the full size versions. It is chambered in 20ga. (nice beginners gauge in my opinion) with a 22" vent rib barrel and choke tubes. The great feature of this shotgun is the ability to adjust the length of pull with the unique stock. The shotgun can "grow" with your Son and last him much longer. You should be able to pick up a Super Bantam for around $300.

Remington Arms would be another U.S. made shotgun worthy of consideration. The Remington model 870 Express Youth is an excellent shotgun. I personally prefer it over the Mossberg as to quality, function, value, ease of cleaning, parts replacement, etc. You should be able to locate a 870Y for slightly more than a Mossberg.

I hope this info helps you in your quest for that "first gun" and if you have any other questions concerning same, please feel free to contact me again if need be.

Thank you for the question Kevin.
