variable power scope choice

Question
Hi Sid: I like bench rest target shooting. I'm switching from a fixed
6X42 scope and putting on a variable on a Ruger .308 bolt rifle.
Goal is eventually to get out 600 yds at the range. What power
range would you recommend ? I like the new Simmons Master
Series design but not sure which is best choice. I don't want to go
with a 50mm objective. Keep it low. Thankyou for any advice.
Glenn

Answer
Hi Glen,

There is certainly a ton of info that we could cover in the selection process of a scope to fit your needs. The market is not in short supply of quality scopes at a wide range of prices and features.

I could give you advice that you no doubt have already read elsewhere (IE. buy the best glass that you can afford etc.) but I'm sure at this point you have already read and/or been told these things. If not, just ask and I'll help with that too.

My job is not to talk you out of a product that you have researched and tend to like.  I do not know what your budget is so I'll assume that you are shopping in the price range that you are comfortable with.

In light of the above, I took an hour or so and researched the Simmons Master Series. I see no reason to advise you against your choice. I am actually impressed with the improvements that Simmons has made in their scopes over the years to include the model that you mention.

So, I suggest that you go with that which you have basically decided upon. You may find out a year or two down the road that you would like to change the glass, and that is ok too. However for now, I think that the Simmons will meet your needs and make you happy in the short term.

For the range/caliber etc. that you outline, I would personally be leaning towards a 6 X 18 variable with target turrets if possible.

Thank you for your question Glenn and good shooting.
