Browning Shotgun Serial # location

Question
I inherited a Browning "Light Twelve" shotgun and wonder if you might tell me where the serial number is located (in order to determine value.)

I have found enough info online to know the 72G - 5500 on the shell receiver denotes year of manufacture, etc, but cannot find the "serial number."

Any info you may give will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ricky Thomason

Answer
Hi Ricky,

According to Brownings owners manual for the "Light Twelve" the serial number should be located "on the underside of the receiver just forward of the loading port".

If for some reason you still are not finding it, I suggest that you call the fine folks at Browning Arms. They have always been more than helpful. You can reach them 1-800-333-3288.

Much additional info is located at their website (www.browning.com) including a copy of your owners manual that I've previously referred to. You may also ask questions at the site.

If I can be any further help, just ask. Thanks for the question Ricky.

Ricky,

Thank you for the kind words I appreciate it.

Concerning your A-5, I suggest that you contact Browning via the info that I provided you for a definate answer. However I was wondering, is there any possibility that the number that you have referred to IS your Brwoning serial number? Just a thought. I do not have all of the Brn. ser. number list but that is info that Browning could advise you of.

One last thing that I'd like to help you with is that you indicated that you originally wanted the info for help in determining a value of your gun.

I can advise of some info that may help you in that regard. The Browning A-5 Lightweight was manufactured in 12ga. from 1952 to 1976 by FN with the 20ga. becoming available in 1958.

Here are some values based upon the above information.

A Browing A-5 Lightweight in "good" condition has a retail value of $450. That is a middle price as there are condition listings both above and below that. IE. The same shotgun in Exc. condition could bring as much as $750 and in poor condition only $200.

I hope this helps you out because thats about all that I can offer. Thanks again for your feedback and the question.
