Good Starter Rifle

Question
I have been an avid hiker and mountain climber for several years now.  Next year I would like to spend a couple of weeks in the wilderness of Alaska.  Through my experience I know that, while rare, bear encounters can turn deadly.  I am looking for a lightwieght rifle that has enough force to maybe make a bear think twice.  However, I also don't want to break the bank on this.  Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Andrew,

As far as bear encounters being rare....... it only takes one ! Don't underestimate this potential. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I'm not sure what your standards are as for "breaking the bank" but you can get into what you need for $500 or under in most areas.

Look into the Marlin Guide Gun in .450. This is their Model 1895M which has a 18.5" barrel. Adjustable rear sight and weighs about 7lbs. The short barrel, light weight, and lever action make it a great choice for the task you have in mind. You should be able to locate one for around $500 or less if you come upon a used one in good condition.

I would check out gun shows, used racks at your local dealer, or websites such as www.gunbroker.com  I'm sure that you will be able locate a reasonably priced rifle in one of these venues.

Thanks for the question and have a great time on the trip!
