20 ga. hi standard

Question
Just bought a 20ga. Hi Standard Field Classic auto shotgun, 28" raised rib barrel, 2 3/4" or 3", ser.# 3126330. It holds 3 shells and works good. On the end of the forestock is a knob marked HI and LO. What is this for, is this a good gun, whats it worth and about what year was it made? Also the raised rib is coming loose, is there some super glue to reattach it? THANK YOU!!!

Answer
My 2 reference directories do list a High Standard model called  Field Classic.
There is the Supermatic Field,  can you double check the name and any other marking on the gun?

In terms of the rib, normally those are put on using soldering. The rib would need to be repaired by a gunsmith.

High Standard made mostly target pistol.
They also made house brand guns for Sears under the JC Higgins name. They made good quality shotguns and rifles at a low cost. but the Gun Control Act of 1968 doomed the company. It did a slow death and went out of business in 1983.

In general High Standard semi auto shotguns are worth $225 to $60 depending on model and condiion.

The following people authored books on this company.
Charles Petty, Tom Dance & Jim Spacek
The books may only cover the handguns
You can check your local library or bookstore

Jim Spacek also has a website
http://www.tm-techmark.com/jspacek.htm
He may be able date your gun by its serial number.
He also may be able sell you a copy of the owners manual.
