Heelflips and pop-shuvits

Question
SUP SCOTT. I'VE BEEN PRACTICING HEELFLIPS LATLEY BECAUSE I CAN'T LAND A KICKFLIP WITH MY FRONT FOOT. ANYWAY LIKE I SAID I'VE TRYING HEELFLIPS AND POP SHUVITS AND ALMOST LANDING THEM. BUT I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT LANDING THEM. FIRST HEELFLIPS. OK I'M SO CLOSE TO LANDING IT. THESE ARE SOME PROBLEMS THAT HAPPEN WHEN I DO A HEELFLIP THAT MAKES ME NOT LAND THEM CAN YOU HELP ME AND GIVE ME ANY TIPS THAT YOU THINK MIGHT HELP. OK SOMETIMES MY FEET HIT THE BOARD IN THE AIR SO IT STOPS SPINNING, I LAND IN FRONT OF MY BOARD, MY BACK FOOT LANDS ON THE BOARD BUT MY FRONT FOOT LANDS IN FRONT OF IT, SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T SPIN, AND SOMETIMES IT SPINS STRAIT UP. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE USEFUL.   NOW POP SHUVITS. IN ORDER TO GET THE SPIN MY BACK FOOT HAS TO BE ON THE WHOLE PART OF THE TAIL, LIKE ALMOST MY PALM OF MY FOOT IS NEAR THE FRONT OF THE TAIL. SO I SPIN IT AND MY BACK FOOT DOESN'T LAND ON IT. I THINK I'M JUST KIND OF SCARED TO LAND BECAUSE TODAY IT SHOT OF FROM UNDER ME. WHEN I SPIN IT, IT SEEMS LIKE I'M TURNING A LITTLE TO GET IT GOING AND THEN TURN BACK TO WHERE I STARTED. SO ANY TIPS WOULD HELP. ESPESSICALLY SO IT DOESN'T SHOOT OUT FROM UNDER ME WHEN I LAND. THANKS ALOT AND FOR READING THIS LONG LETTER!!

Answer
Okay first off, DON"T WRITE IN ALL CAPS, it's hard to read, and in the interworldweb, it means that you are yelling.

Okay, Heelflips - first let's start all over.  Front foot just behind bolts, toes / ball of foot hanging off the board a bit.  Back foot centered like it would be for an ollie (you could move it opposite of the front foot a bit, but that has a tendency to spin the board a bit, which could lead you to doing 180 heelflips later AFTER you learn them straight up)  Kicking it too hard and not ollieing enough causes the board to spin on it's tail and doesn't feel good when you land.  I think heelflips are easier cause you can just set up your feet and ollie and the board does the rest.  If your feet are stopping the board from spinning you might not be lifting your knees enough.  If you are trying to ollie  to hard sometimes that happens, or if you're lazy like me, I just doen't jump / lift my knees enough.  Concentrate on ollieing good, with the foot placement above.  It may take a while but it'll happen.

Pop-Shuvits - depending on the direction you want (I find backside shuvits easier than frontside), you have to approach it differently.  Backsides will easily spin underneath of you, Frontsides will not, you kinda have to jump backwards a tad bit.  Here's what you can do - get a deck (old or new doesn't matter) with no trucks or bolts in it - just the deck (doesn't even have to have grip on it), and practice doing the shuvits on carpet.  Skate shops are good for this but you'll annoy the hell out of them if you do it there. You also don't want to ruin your mothers good carpet in the living room, so find a basement area or other place where you can stopm around and not wear a hole in the carpet to practice.  Once you get the deck spinning the right way everytime, take it to your skateboard and remember to keep rolling. Don't try and do this while you are just standing still, it works much better at a medium speed.
Keep your weight centered, don't try to ollie real high or anything, just twitch your feet in opposite directions without moving them too much, land keeping your weight balalnced between your feet, and you won't end up on your butt.

Practice, Practice, Practice...
