roller skates

Question
I have my indoor roller skates from 40 years ago.  They are in excellent condition.  Can I use them outside on a trail or sidewalk today?

Answer
Hi Wendy,
If you haven't used your skates in 40 years you may want to have a roller rink look them over before you use them.  After that amount of time the black rubber cushions have probably dried out and could possibly crack the 1st time you try to use them.  The bearing will most likely need oil also.  If this is something you can do yourself, make sure you do it before skating on them, to be on the safe side.

As for skating outside on a trail or sidewalk?  I wouldn't recommend it unless you purchase outdoor wheels.  Wheels that were used 40 years ago were very hard and rather small wheels which will cause you to trip if you hit a pebble or twig.  The wheels they use now for outdoor skating are softer and bigger which handle pebbles etc much easier.

I think it would be worth your time to purchase wrist guards for protection also.  If you fall, the wrists are the first things to get hurt.

Good Luck but make sure your skates are safe for outdoor skating before you try them.
