High top or low-cut boot?

2016/7/21 17:59:18

Question
I am ready to buy my own pair of quads and have been researching them a lot but I can't figure out what the benefit of high-top boots are if I'm not going to be jumping.  Are they better overall for ankle support?  How do I decide whether to get high-top or low-cut boots if all I'm doing is skating around in a circle? :) If I decide to get some outdoor wheels to skate in my neighborhood, would it be better to get the low-cut boots so I could use them for both indoor and outdoor skating?

Thanks!

Answer
Melissa,
High top boots not only give more ankle support, which helps prevent sprains & undue pressure on your ankle, but it also helps you to achieve edge control for more precise turning.
If you are skating outdoors, you should have outdoor wheels which you can use indoors as well -  the height of the boot is not determined by whether you skate indoor or outdoor. Just consider which you will feel more comfortable skating in.
If all you will be doing is very basic skating you can really go by your comfort level.
Look at it this way - figure skating - high boot; dance skating - high boot; speed skating - low boot; roller derby - low boot. weak ankles - high boot; basic recreational skating - whichever is more comfortable for you. Make sure you have the proper protective gear for safe skating!!!
If you are able to try them on, do so & compare. Go with the type you are most comfortable with. Good luck & happy skating.
