bearing cover

Question
I had an issue while I decided to take apart my skates to clean and lubricate them. In the process, I ended up breaking two plastic covers that secure the bearing in place on my Bladerunner Advantage in-line skates. Just wondering if you would know where I could purchase them (on the internet or any stores) and if I actually need them or not. I think they keep the grease in and dirt and grime out of the bearing.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Marianne,
I don't believe you'll be able to find replacements for those plastic shields. It's possible that a local shop may sell you a pair of 8mm bearings to replace the ones you compromised. If you can't find a local shop that will sell 2 bearings, let me know - [email protected] or call me at 212 777-3232, if you are in the NYC area I might be able get you 2 bearings. I would need to know the ABEC rating.
That said, you do have 2 other options:
You can buy a set of bearings & hold the remaining 14 for future use as needed - you will be replacing bearings eventually.
Or
You can use the bearings without the plastic shield, at least for the time being - I doubt whether the ball bearings will fall out (check by turning them over); they will get dirty faster but on the other hand they'll be easier to clean. I've seen many skates in my time with one or more bearings with the shields missing.
