painful blading

2016/7/21 17:59:57

Question
Why do my shins and lower back hurt so bad when I skate? I am a little overweight but not too much.

Answer
Hi Chris,
I'll assume that you're new to blading?   Skating is a little different than any other type of exercise that you may get and it uses different muscle groups.

Your back probably hurts because roller blades tend to make you tip forward a little bit so you're using your lower back muscles trying to keep your balance.

Your shins most likely hurt because you're bending your knees and exerting pressure when you push.

Try standing up a little straighter when you push and hopefully once your muscles get use to blading, the pain will disappear.  Just don't over due it......skate a little at a time but do it on a regular basis each week and those muscles will all strengthen.

If it's an unusual pain that doesn't go away I would see a sports doctor just to make sure you haven't hurt your back or given yourself shin splints from pushing to hard.

If I can help with anything further, feel free to write again.

Good Luck
Pat
