FIS ski length restrictions

Question
Hello Cynthia, I have recently begun training for Masters ski racing in NZ. I have read that the FIS length (and radius) restrictions on racing skis are for safety reasons. Does this mean that longer skis are safer, and should I follow the FIS recommendations such as having SL skis no shorter than 165cm? Or is this really only of concern to the professionals?

Answer
Dear Paul --

The FIS rules are to standardize competition.  If you are in a race that is FIS sanctioned, you must use ski equipment that meets their rules.

For FIS Masters competitions, equipment rules are recommended guidelines with the exception of Super G races.  In the Super G the ski length may be no shorter than 185 cm for men and 180 cm for women.  Longer skis are critical for stability in the faster races.

If you are not racing in sanctioned races, you need only follow the equipment rules of your local racing club or organization.  USSA recommends that competitors in Masters event compete on equipment designed for the particular discipline, but do not dictate ski length.  A longer ski is not necessarily safer in a slalom race, as short skis can often clear the gates more quickly and still give sufficient stability at slalom speeds.

Good luck to you.  Enjoy your racing.
