Toddler skiing

Question
Hi,
We have a boy who will be 3 in February. Last season we got him skiing with strap-on skis holding his hands. He loved it and this year we'd like to get him out in "real" equipment.
The problem is that he has small feet - toddler size 6, perhaps Mondo size 14. We can't find any boots this size. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
-Roy

Answer
Hi and thanks for the question.

Small feet can be a problem.
You could see if there will be a ski swap meet in your area. These can be great places to pick up some great equipment year after year.

Depending on how big the boots are - you may be able to double up with socks - but beware with kids and getting cold. Double socks can actually be colder.

Unfortunately if you can't find the gear it is quite dificult to get kids up and skiing. But i do know mondo go very small, maybe try a rental shop this year. Buying at this age will get expensive - some kids dont get a season out of equipment due to growth spurts.

More importantly - is your child very strong/solid on his feet, in the legs? If he is not walking flat footed and well balanced - ski boots may potentially cause damage if on for too long. Research into kids feet and shoes is only just emerging, but there is the potential for feet problems.  Also, if not strong in the legs - the forces created from skiing can be damaging and inrease rick of fractures at a very early age.  Best to get him kicking balls and riding bikes etc. to increase strength.
