fin question?

Question
Hi: I have a Sea Trend hybrid approx. 10ft. It has a place for three fins. I  am just starting to windsurf.on a lake in Pa. I am 5ft 10 190#. To start not sure if all fins should be same length and could you use one till you begin to plane or water start? also have 1984 hi fly 300 complete from a yard sale, "heavy"but stable? Did not want to spend alot on fins until I find out if board is o.k. to learn on. Thanks. RoB

Answer
Hey Rob,

One fin in the center on the Sea Trend will work just fine. The othe two slots use what are called 'thruster' fins. They are much smaller than the main fin and provide extra grip for sharp turning and help with upwind sailing. Not really necessary until you get to a more advanced level of sailing. The HiFly would be a decent rig to learn on. It's an old school type board but that's the type of board that most of us old timers learned on. Sounds like you are ready to sail.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
