Question

Mast step and assembly
I just picked up a Hobie Alpha wind surfer at a local tag sale. I'd like to find/replace the insert that holds the mast step. It's in a long aluminum extrusion and pin that locks the mast in won't stay put. I believe there is a spring missing but I can't take the unit apart to see what's missing or how to replace it. The step slides back and forth in the extrusion. Any thing you can help me with would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hey Joe,

I believe that you are missing a lever that would go on the front part of the piece with the hole. The lever would cause the two metal rods down inside the hole to compress on the slotted pin that goes in the hole, thus holding the mast base in place. The pedal/push button should release the  part with that the base connects to and allow it to move forward or back. As for disassembling the track, check the sides closely for pins that would go from side to side through the plastic parts on each end. Removing the pins would allow removal of the parts so you can get to the base connection part and figure out what needs to be fixed. I'm not sure where you could find parts so you may need to replace the whole mast track with a new track. If it comes to that, let me know and I should be able to provide some resources.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
