Weight and Board Volume

Hello Windlover.

I have another question about weight and board volume. I am currently sailing with a 150 L board and I would like to purchase a smaller board (and thankfully, a lighter one) but one that will not sink under my weight so that I can still uphaul the sail. I weigh 115 lbs (52 kg) and I have tried a 122 L which was perfectly fine. I was wondering if 100 L would be too small or would a 110 L be more preferable? I am always on the lookout for a windsurfer with a smaller board that I can try but unfortunately, I still have not had the chance. I usually sail with winds at approximately 25-30 km/hr (15 knots).

Hey Anna,

Deciding between 100L and 110L would depend on two factors, your size and your ability to balance while uphauling the sail. I have a 105L board that I can rope start but it is a balancing act that has taken years to perfect. If you are on a board that is a little low on volume for uphauling, either the tail or the nose wants to go under. You can also end up with all the board under (which adds another dimension to the balancing act) and end up struggling more than you want. But I'm 185lbs and so I need a bit more float than lighter weight sailors.

If you are 120lbs or under, and your balance is fairly good, then you should be able to handle a 100L board. If you are 120-140+, I would say that a 110 would suit you a bit better. Also, If you were able to uphaul on a 122L with no problems, you probably have your balance down well enough to go with 100L. Even if it is a challenge the first few times, your abilities will grow and you will figure out what works to get the sail up and stay on the board. A 100L board will also be a good size for you to start learning waterstarts on.
