OBrien Polylite Plus

Question
I'm an old guy just looking for something easy to enjoy windsurfing a little. I'd also like for it to be a good board for a nephew who is a beginner to try. Am just looking to pick up something cheap, used. I see an OBrien Poly Lite Plus for sale locally. Would this be any good for me? Thanks very much for your help.

Answer
Hey Tom,

The board you mention would be a decent beginner board as long as all the parts are there. The main items to verify are there would be the mast base, fin, & daggerboard. The fin would be easily replaced but the daggerboard and mast base would be difficult. I don't remember for sure what type of mast/board connection is on the board itself. If it is a long track, then any aftermarket base will work. If it is just a couple of holes, then the mast base is specific to that board and hard to replace.

This all said, here is some background on the board. They are extremely durable as they are made of plastic. Even with the 'Lite' label, they are also quite heavy. Packing it around from house to car to the water can be a challenge for a strong guy. They also developed a moniker 'SlowBrien' as they were not a fast board compared to their lighter counterparts. This is part of the reason that they are inexpensive as used boards.

So give some thought to what is involved with transporting and helping the nephew carry the board and rig. I do think it is great that you want to help your nephew get started in windsurfing and making the experience an easy and enjoyable one is what will keep him going. I do alot of different sports and my personal opinion is that windsurfing is one of the best sports on the planet for many reasons. Getting young people into the sport is what keeps it growing.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
