Luff Length vs Mast Length

Question
Hi Windlover

I have just bought a used Tushingham Storm Force 6.5m and a Tushingham 75% 460 mast. The sail indicates a luff of 4.64. I also have a Bic mast cup (not extension) and a 4 wheel pulley hook.

I can downhaul the sail to about 1.5 inch of "spare" rope between the pulleys. I think I need more downhaul because the middle battens still poke to the side of the mast even after outhaul. I'm nervous about applying that last bit of force because there is a very small gap of about < 1mm between the base of the mast and the mast cup, and so I'm concerned the mast could split at the base.

My question is should I use a mast extension, or should I just haul away?

Answer
Hey Justin,

From your description of the sail battens, you definitely need more downhaul. You really need to get at least a short extension. If you think you might buy a larger mast in the future, consider a medium size extension.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
