Question
hi,
I am a very fast walker and I dont know if Im walking to fast people tell me I do . If I am how do I slow it down and make sure Im not doing harm to myself ? I walk 3 miles in 45 mins . Is this to fast for my heart as far as the heart rate ?

Answer
First of all, any time you exercise too hard, your heart and lungs will tell you. If you are walking too fast to carry on a conversation because of being out of breath, THAT is too fast. 15 minutes per mile is a fast pace, but not too fast for you if you can talk comfortably. You could also count your pulse, but paying attention to your breathing will work just as well and it is easier.

Maybe people are telling you that because they can't keep up! The truth is, walking is great for your health, and you should try to walk as fast as you can without becoming breathless. You did not give any details of health status, weight, age, and how long you have been on a walking program. Other warning signs to look for, indicating your walking is too intense would be chronic fatigue and muscle soreness. If you notice these signs for days and days on end, you could be pushing yourself too hard. If this happens, the best thing to do is take more days off, not slow down your walking pace (as long as you are not breathless).
